HELPFUL TIPS FOR RAISING KIDS

Our time with our little ones goes by so quickly. One day they seem to be young and dependent next day they are big, mature with a mind of their own. Even though I'm still raising young kids I cannot believe how much they have grown.

Here are some tips that I have found to be helpful:

1. Have a daily schedule for your kids- the days when I have a schedule my life flows way better, activities go by much more smoothly. On the days when I allow them to roam the house with no purpose and structure, its chaotic and frustrating. Kids thrive on structure. It is also important to include them in these plans as well.

2. Have them write down their goals-The principles we have for our own life and career should be the same principles we pass on to our little ones. Take time to sit with them and discuss your goals for them and have them set goals for themselves. Now that Kaity is 8 we intend to include her in our family goal planning discussions.

3. Detach and assess when they are misbehaving. As parents we tend to react to our kids behaviors out of anger and frustration vs taking a deeper look into what’s causing the behavior. What I have found is, little kids act up when they are exhausted or frustrated. Older kids act up when they believe they do not have a voice. As parents and caregivers it is important to take a step back to assess the behavior.

These are three points that’s I find to be helpful. Please share your parenting tips.

DREAMING LIKE A KID AGAIN

My daughter celebrated a birthday recently. When I look at her I see so much potential, the ability to grow, to excel, and to create a future that's amazing. What if I saw myself that way? What if I looked in the mirror and saw myself, my dreams, my goals and potential as raw and authentic as my eight year old self did?

Lets bring back the youthful zest for life. Do not allow your thoughts to hold you back. We are the masters of our now and the creators of our future.

We can do ALL THINGS through Christ who gives us strength.

PUT LIFE INTO THOSE OLD GOALS

A few weeks ago I heard a story about an Olympic team that was dominating in their sport. Their coach was asked to explain the techniques that he had employed in coaching that aided in their performance. The coach stated that he aimed at getting his team to focus on making one percent improvements in each category of the sport.

How does this translate to our goals? Many of us set goals at the beginning of the year as it represents a fresh start. However, as we approach February many of us have stopped working at our goals. The key is to take smaller steps which will prevent overwhelm and fatigue.

One area that I aim to improve on is discipline and structure in raising my little ones. I enjoy reading parenting books that give great advice but cannot seem to find that hour each day to read. I have cut down my reading expectation to five minutes instead of thirty to sixty. Each morning I'm up at 4am and reading is now a part of my morning routine.

Give the one percent change a try. Small incremental changes in each area that will boost your self confidence and over time will yield the results you desire.

SMALL GAIN FOR A BIG LOSS

A friend once told me a story of how she went to the laundromat to pick up her laundry which she had dropped off earlier that day. Just another routine day, only problem was she had to put her car on the meter which was literally outside the laundromat. She figured she would run in quickly grab her clothes and be out in no time, so she did not bother paying the meter. In less than a few minutes she was out and returned to a big costly ticket on her car. She saved $25 cents but in return it cost her a whole lot more.

The lesson in this story is, at times in an effort to save a few we end up paying a whole lot more. I'm learning the negative effects of taking short cuts. The lessons are hard but important lessons to learn.

I encourage you to take the long road, it pays better in the long run.

MAJOR LESSON FROM A SMALL MISTAKE

A few days ago while driving with the kiddos I heard a knocking sound in my car. I did take it serious, just not serious enough to rush to my mechanic. Two days later I decided I would rush to my doctor then go to my mechanic. That day my car died.

I remember listening to an interview with Alex Trebek who stated that he wished he had paid attention to the little pain in his abdomin. We all know that lack of attention cost him his life. Its the little things that we ignore that become big issue items when ignored.

As we approach 2022 take time to care for yourself. Selfcare is important. The visits to the nail salon, the spa or relaxation, are important. However, what I am referring to are those deeper approaches to our health both physical and mental health. The pain in the gut, the consistent burning stomach after a simple meal are just examples of those little health issues that tend to go unchecked. In 2022 make checking in with your doctor a priority and take your health seriously.

THANKFUL FOR ALL MY BLESSINGS

This year, this month and even today are important transitions in so many ways. As I move forward into a new  decade as I turn 40 years old this year, a new job opportunity is on the horizon and as my strength and faith are being tested, I am always mindful of the hidden blessings in lifes experiences.  Many of these challenges have put me on my knees and tested my faith, however,  I can still say THANK YOU LORD.

Life comes with its challenges and no doubt its many blessings. Having the ability to experience both should humble us. Allow today to be a day of self reflection, gratitude and a day when we turn our thoughts to those less fortunate and determine ways in which we can meet their needs.

Hope your thanks giving was a blessing.

PREVENTING BURN OUT WHILE PARENTING

There isn't anything that moves me more than my children and there is not anyone who need me more than my children. But for me to be available I have to first focus on me. I have learned in my experiences in life that you cannot show up the way you ought to, when you are tired, exhausted and burned out.

It is important as we raise our children to have them understand and respect our space and our quiet time. Here are a few tips that have helped me to prevent burn while raising my kids:

1. Set clear boundaries- It is ok to have your children know and respect your "me time".

2. Be firm on your NO- Kids have high expectations and often times believe that you should meet their every need. At times we as parents feel guilty when we say no. However always remember you cannot fill from an empty cup.

3. Be present when you are with your children- Do not be distracted when you should be spending time with them. Children who feel neglected will engage in negative activities for your attention.

These are just three tips. Please share your tips for preventing burn out while parenting.
