CREATING STRUCTURE AND BOUNDARIES IN PARENTING

If your kids are like my kids they love TV, video games, chips, ice-cream and pizza. If you are a mom or dad like me, the thought of the things they love makes you pull your hair out.

Here are some ways that I have found to keep them grounded as I seek harmony in my life.

1. Get them involved in family meetings and decisions. Their voice is important and we want them to know that. Involving them in the discussions allows them to feel empowered to speak up and make valuable contributions to conversations.

2. Give them responsibilities and make them accountable. One of the things I did not do earlier with my kids was give them little chores around the house. As they grew older I found myself overwhelmed. Giving them responsibilities and holding them accountable allowed them to make better decisions regarding keeping the place clean and allowed them to take ownership of what they did or did not do.

3. Have them on a schedule. This is a game changer as it allows them to know what comes next and what is expected. Getting them on a schedule will develop them into disciplined children. They will hate it at first but they will thank you later.

4. Read to them and train them to read and enjoy reading. I am a busy person and our morning commute is lengthy. This is an excellent time for reading. I must admit, getting them to read in the car and having a no phone policy does not go over well in the mornings, currently it is a developing habit.

I hope you enjoyed these tips.

PUSHING THROUGH THE FEAR

Fear holds us back more than anything else in our lives. How many times do we fill our days with being busy and neglect those action steps that will help us more forward.

Here are a few quotes from the book "The Millionaire Real Estate Agent" by Keller Williams that you may find inspiring and may help nudge you closer to your goals.

1. Once you try and achieve one thing you thought might not be possible it becomes easier and easier for you to "see the impossible" and then achieve it.

2. You can't know what you are really capable of doing until you try and never give up.

3. Doubts can truly undermine your confidence, your action and ultimately your dream.

4. Beliefs grounded in myths tend to lead to unfounded fears and a life of limitations.

5. Learn to look past your fears to the truth of a situation, investigating the myths that tend to get in the way of success.

Please share the quote that impacts you the most.

LESSONS FROM THE MAMBA HIMSELF

When I think of Kobe Bryant I think more of his work ethic versus his success on the court. Here are some quotes from the Mamba himself.

1. Rest at the end, not in the middle.

2. Everything was done to get better at my craft.

3. I had to rely on skill a lot more, had to study a lot more.

4. Talk to and study the greats.

5. Increase your level of detail and obsession.

FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT

I love the concept of goal setting. Setting and accomplishing goals gives us a feeling of completion. However, at times the real challenge comes after we accomplish that goal and we return to bad habits. One great example is spring cleaning, it gives a sense of completion when done, but it is often times temporary as we return to the habit of gathering clutter. I believe that a goal is not always the answer instead what is needed is an identity change. For example, I have taken on an identity as someone who does not snack. Taking on that identity has been helpful in determining my eating habits.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when thinking about your goals:

1.       Is setting this goal going to change my negative behavior or is it only dealing with the result of my negative behavior.

2.       What daily choices can I make that will lead to behavioral change.

3.       What is my desired identity and how do I adapt that.

4.       Am I taking the average route in my actions?

Bad habits give immediate gratification which is why they easily become habit. Good habits encourage putting in the work first but the results are delayed.

Try changing your identity and see how that affects your goals.

THE POWER OF YOUR WORDS

Have you ever wondered why most of the miracles in the bible were spoken? It is because our words are powerful.

It is so very important to take constant inventory of what we speak, what we listen to and how we allow others to speak to us and around us. That can be in the form of our screen time and the content we consume. There was a point in time when listening to the news was destructive to me mentally and emotionally. As a result I had to turn to content that was more uplifting and positive.

Consider the impact the words we speak is having on our own minds as we speak to ourselves. We tend to be more careless with our words when we are alone, when we are self reflecting or even self criticizing. I believe when we are desiring to grown in an area of our life it is important to speak our desires to ourselves in a repetitive way. Author and coach Marshawn Evans Daniels says " we speak what we seek until we see what we said".

Always speak life into others. One of the pivots that I had to make as a parent was the way I spoke to my children. Sometimes when we interact with children and even our subordinates we can be carelessly disrespectful.

Take the time to listen to yourself as you speak to others and as you speak to yourself. Begin paying attention to those conversations. Are they speaking life into yourself and others?

UNMASKING YOUR FEAR

This week I challenged myself to take a different approach to marketing as a realtor. I had to literally talk myself through the process and the fear of failure and doubt almost had me crippled. Here are a few things I have learned about fear and doubt.

1. The feeling of fear does not mean you are on the wrong path, it means you are moving in the right direction. Continue moving ahead.

2. God always blesses our effort when we step pass our fear and move forward in faith.

3. The voice of doubt in our head is always wrong.

4. Successful people have developed the skill of feeling the fear and pushing through it anyway.

5. The bigger the challenge, the greater the fear, the bigger the blessing, the greater the reward.

Live in faith and not fear.

OWNING YOUR SELF WORTH

In this time of internet browsing, facebooking and instagramming it is so important that we are clear on our standards, values and of utmost importance, knowing at the very core, who we are.

Knowing and believing your sense of worth is central to many of the emotional challenges that we face. I personally believe that we never find validity in ourselves if we are seeking validation from someone else. We gain validity in ourselves when we keep the promises and commitments we make to ourselves.

Here are some steps that I have taken to heighten my self worth.

1. Being clear on what I want, my standards and my values

2. Setting reasonable expectations about myself and others.

3. Setting clear boundaries with people.

4. Setting and hitting my goals and standards.

5. Increasing proficiency in areas where I am weak. Practice makes better, better builds confidence, confidence brings success.

Happy self worthing
